THE M7RC TACKLES SILVERSTONE’S TRADITIONAL NATIONAL CLUB CIRCUIT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SEVEN YEARS AND WITH A HUGE ENTRY THAT IS SURE TO PROVIDE PLENTY OF INTENSE ACTION OVER FOUR RACES …
Tied on points atop the Miglia standings coming into Silverstone this weekend are ex-champions Kane Astin and Aaron Smith, each with a victory apiece in the opening four rounds, whilst another multi-titleist Ian Curley lies 3rd having also scored a win last time out at Snetterton. In 6th overall, Sam Summerhayes completes the quartet of 1st place awards having triumphed at Donington back in April, fittingly as he has generously supplied all the podium trophies for this season. Reigning champion Rupert Deeth currently lies outside the top 10 after a mixed start to his defence but don’t rule him out for top honours, likewise former title winner Jeff Smith in 5th who appears to be recovered from his rib-breaking shunt on the Brands GP circuit last season. Others who could upset the form book include Phil Bullen-Brown in 4th overall who is edging ever closer to a first series win, plus Joe Thompson and Colin Peacock who both won on the National layout here during a Winter Challenge round in 2019. In the Libre class, Huw Turner heads the standings in his 16v example, but the tighter nature of the Club circuit could mean the 5-ports will be well in contention.
For its 60th anniversary season, the heritage Mini Se7en formula continues its resurgence in entries, and leading the way is Glen Woodbridge whose tally was considerably enhanced with victory in the opening round at Donington, plus high scores in the other three races. Last season’s title winner Damien Harrington got into his stride last time out in Norfolk with double victory having chalked up a DNF earlier the season opener, whilst Daniel Munro lies 4th having secured the remaining victor’s trophy. However, they will not have it all their own way as the likes of Ross Billison, Spencer Wanstall and Darren Thomas all know how to be in front when it matters, and similarly, seasoned campaigner Graeme Davis has been around at the chequered flag in each race so far to lie 3rd overall. The S-Class category is no less competitive and here it is former champion Michael Winkworth who the rest have to reel in, a double maximum at the Donington opener and podiums at Snetterton last month edging him clear of Patrick McCarthy in 2nd, the latter impressing in only his second season in the formula. Coming up on the rails however is James May, his pair of victories in Norfolk marking him out as a favourite this weekend too.
