EVENT PREVIEW: Minis Head to Norfolk
06/05/2010

The fast straights and flowing corners of the Snetterton circuit near Norwich has proven to be a firm favourite with the teams and drivers in the Mini 7 Racing Club so expect to see plenty of drafting and overtaking during the four 10 lap races this weekend.

While Andy Hack had secured the Mini Miglia title during the penultimate meeting of the 2009 season at Croft, Snetterton was the scene for an exciting climax to the Mini Se7en Challenge and also for the Mini Se7en S Class title race.  Kane Astin secured the 2009 title during the final race of the season.  The Cambridgeshire driver bounced back after a broken tie bar pitched him off the road in the first race to become the 2009 Dunlop Mini Se7en Champion.  Julian Affleck was victorious in the S Class title battle, but only after a countback on race wins as he ended the season equal on points with arch rival Julian Proctor.  The Miglia races were won by Paul Thompson, with Andy Hack taking the final victory in his championship winning season.

Now in its 45th season, the Dunlop Mini Se7en Challenge is still providing some of the best club motorsport action anywhere in the UK, while big brother, the Mini Miglias, which is celebrating 40 years at the top in 2010, is also keeping up the family tradition of door-to-door racing action at every turn.

The opening rounds at Rockingham last month proved to be a happy hunting ground for Mini Se7en Champions, past and present.  In the Se7en’s encounter 2006 champion Andrew Deviny took a lights to flag victory, while 2007 champion Max Hunter stormed through from 7th on the grid to take the second spot on the podium ahead of Paul Spark.

In the Miglia race it was 2008 Mini Se7en Champion Paul Thompson who took the first win ahead of reigning Se7en Champion Kane Astin, who moved up to the top class at the end of last year, and Sarah Munns, with all three drivers covered by just 0.4 seconds after 10 laps.

2010 is a very special year for the Mini Miglias as the championship celebrates 40 years of action packed racing.  The first race for the 850cc Mini Se7ens was held in 1966 and within three years there was a call for a more powerful formula and the Mini Miglia challenge was born in 1970 for 1000cc A-Series powered cars (hence the name).   Today they might be powered by 1300cc engines, while the Mini Se7ens are now powered by 1000cc engines, but their trademark action packed races have remained the same over the past 40 seasons.

Within the Mini Se7en field there are S Class cars, which is a championship for drivers competing on a budget.  These cars are not as modified as a standard Se7en but they are just as much fun to drive.  2009 S Class Champion Julian Affleck is back to defend his class title while the previous two champions, Nathan Burge and Tristen Knight, have moved up and are now competing for the overall Se7en title.
